Your Light Blog

If there’s someone in your life that has been a light for you be sure to let them know. Leave your stories and song comments below:

from Santa Monica with the “Your Light Video.” The song features a guitar originally purchased in Cadez Spain prior to embarking on a ship heading to West Africa. This Guitarras Alhambra has a unique sound that helps capture the mood of the song. The guitar style is patterned after a musician named Juan “Cha” Gonzalez Chavez who would often hammer onto the strings and create a second melody line. Juan would call this song “Romantica.” The song lyrics explore the emotions experienced when away from a loved one.

Cactus Rose Blog

Come steal away by coach, horse, or goldmine and leave your comments below:

from the Arizona high desert with “Cactus Rose.” This song was mined from an Arizona barn and found etched on an old saddle near the Gold Nugget Saloon. Lyrics were signed by Wild Bill Hickok and melody kept alive by old cowboys. When camping in Northern Montana a retired Rodeo cowboy sang me the song after seeing me going for runs on the trails. He wondered if my horse got away like Cactus Rose. He told me about the cactus flower bloom that only occurs a few days a year. The song stuck in my head and like a spring creek got wider and wilder. I still imagine a spirited cowgirl singing the lead on this song. I’m still looking for that voice. For the last 3 years I kept hearing someone playing the spoons on this song and I tracked down Artis the Spoonman who happily added the rhythm of a trotting horse. Artis told me he spent 20yrs of his life living outside like a cowboy.

Aloha Aroha Blog

Yes I could talk all day about how this is a magic place in the world, Hope you enjoyed the beautiful dancing of Vaihau against Bahia de Cook, You may leave comments below:

from the South Pacific Islands with the “AlohaAroha Video.” Seems like it was yesterday that I was returning from Huahine. The fragrance of the Tiare still lingers. An earlier trip to Bora Bora gave me the idea for this song. After first visiting several Hawaiian Islands I remember setting foot on Bora Bora as the sun was setting. I walked with anticipation towards the mesmerizing sounds of drums piercing the night air. It brought me to cute home where a family drum group was singing, dancing, and drumming. Visions of watching a young Tahitian woman with cut-off-jeans and a tank top solo dancing in the moonlight stays with me till today. Lather on some monoi and prepare to watch Vaihau McComb dance on the sand and coral. Primary set location overlooks Bahia de Cook on the island of Huahine. Captain Cook and Gauguin would rise in their grave to see Vaihau dance. Tahitian Rap by Moehau Colombani to parallel English lyrics.

Moment of Joy Blog

Coming from the Sherwood forest of Malibu California hope you enjoyed Will Scarlet singing “Moment of Joy.” You can leave comments on this blog.

from the Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire with the story of Will Scarlet singing “Moment of Joy.” The set location was in Malibu CA at the entrance to a property donated to the City of Malibu by Barbara Streisand. The area was heavily wooded and chosen to replicate a California version of the Sherwood Forest. Unfortunately the surrounding area was devastated by the 2018 wildfires and with a heavy heart it is painful to return to the site….. As a ploy to bring the Sheriff into the dense woods, Robin Hood uses song and trumpet as a lure. Joe Sherman plays Will Scarlet who is joined by Robin’s Band of Merry Men in song…. in the end they get a surprise visit!

Lost Blog

These days there seems to be noise coming from all directions making it difficult to hear your own voice. This song is about getting lost with those you care about. This way there might be a chance to find your own song.

from a very tall forest with the”The Lost Video.” Filmed in a stand of Redwood trees near Santa Cruz California. We drove up the Big sur and set up near a small stream in a small park. Luckily Hayden got a little background footage and we were getting through the first verse when some rangers came up and shut us down. They then proceeded to escort us out of the park. Do you think serenading the redwoods is a crime?…anyway I took what I had with footage along the Big Sur and did some improvised compositing. The footage of the redwoods came out stunning. The Fog River footage was just a freak of nature and was an unplanned suprise. The song originated while in school in Indiana. The harmony in the final verse is a recent addition that had been haunting me for several years and finally came together. The song explores the fantasy of being lost with someone you care about, even though the feeling may not be mutual…and yes that situation is older than the redwoods.

Soundtrack and footage from overlook off Goat Creek Road at 7000ft above Mazama. Timelapse of Mt. Rainier filmed after rare high pressure system uncovered brilliant blue skies. Original Music by joSherman with Trumpet overdub by David Gotler. Original lyrics came from time climbing and skiing in the northwest mountains.
